Starting Strong: A Guide to Your First Therapy Session
So, you’ve decided to take the plunge and give therapy a shot. Good for you! As a therapy client myself, I totally get that starting therapy can be a mix of excitement and nerves. That’s why I want to give you a heads up on what to expect during your first therapy appointment. Consider this blog your guide to feeling more at ease and prepared for this wild, wonderful, and transformative experience.
1. Initial Chat and Scheduling:
First things first, I recommend reaching out so we can briefly discuss what brings you to therapy and how I can support you. This allows me an opportunity to calm any nerves you may be feeling. You can call, email, or text – whatever feels easiest for you. When you make this first contact, I can guarantee that you will be met with kindness, acceptance, and understanding. If you are happy to move forward, we’ll work together to schedule your first appointment. I am very flexible in terms of your preferences, face to face at my office in Topsham or virtual, as well as frequency. We’ll chat about your availability, preferences, and any concerns you might have. Together, we’ll find a time that works for you to kickstart your therapy journey.
2. Warm Welcome and a Warmer Cuppa:
When you arrive for your first session, be prepared to be greeted with a warm welcome and an even warmer cup of tea (or coffee)! We’ll start by introducing ourselves and getting to know each other. This is you safe space, free of judgment, where you can share why you’re seeking therapy, your goals, and any questions you have. I’m here to support you, so don’t hold back!
3. Building Rapport:
During that initial session, we’ll focus on building a connection and trust. It is so important that you feel comfortable with me as your therapist because this relationship is the foundation for your healing journey. We’ll create a safe space where you can freely express yourself, explore your thoughts and emotions, and work towards your goals.
4. Gathering Background Information:
To better understand your unique circumstances, I’ll ask questions about your personal history, relationships, and relevant experiences. This helps me gain insight into your current challenges and develop a personalised treatment plan just for you. Remember, everything you share is highly confidential and respected.
5. Goal Setting:
Together, we’ll identify your therapy goals. Whether you want relief from anxiety, healing from past trauma, or personal growth, we’ll work towards achieving those goals. Having clear objectives helps us measure progress and celebrate your achievements along the way. Therapy is a partnership, so your active participation is key!
6. Exploring Therapeutic Approaches:
As a therapist, I’m trained in different approaches, like cognitive-behaviorual therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques. We’ll figure out which approach resonates with you and aligns with your goals. It’s all about finding what works best for you. But don’t worry, I won’t overwhelm you with fancy terms. Instead, we’ll have down-to-earth conversations and work together to find what works best for you.
7. Session Duration and Frequency:
Typically, therapy sessions last around 50-55 minutes, but we can adjust based on your needs and preferences. We’ll also discuss how often we should meet – weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly – to ensure we stay on track and make progress. Remember, therapy takes time, so be patient with yourself.
Your first therapy appointment is the start of an incredible journey towards healing and personal growth. As your therapist, I’m here to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can explore, grow, and make positive changes. Together, we’ll set goals, build rapport, and use effective therapeutic approaches to help you unlock your true potential, find inner peace, and creating a life that aligns with your values and aspirations. You’re not alone – I’ve got your back every step of the way.
